(Re)-Imagining a New Sense of Self

Mindfulness and Breath Awareness for Youth Well-Being

A First Encounter with Mindfulness

For many young participants, the session was their first direct experience of mindfulness as a lived practice rather than a theoretical idea. Through conscious breathing, they explored the relationship between breath, body, mind, and creativity, discovering new ways to approach their inner world with curiosity and acceptance.

Returning to the Present Moment

With no prior familiarity with mindfulness practices, participants were guided through simple breathing exercises that strengthened attention and concentration. They learned how to gently return their focus to the present moment, even when the mind wandered. This process supported the development of non-judgmental awareness, allowing thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations to be observed without labeling or identification.

Awareness as Emotional Regulation

As the session progressed, mindfulness emerged as a practical tool for emotional regulation. Participants became more aware of stress, anxiety, and automatic reactions, and learned to respond to these experiences with greater balance and calm rather than reactivity.

Observing, Describing, Participating

A key outcome of the session was the development of core mindfulness skills:

observing inner experiences, describing them clearly, and participating fully in the present moment. These abilities supported clearer expression, calmer communication, and a more grounded sense of engagement within the group. The introduction of a simple breathing technique also helped create a safe space for creativity.

Opening New Possibilities

Participants described the experience as transformative, referring to it as an opening to

“a world of previously unknown possibilities.”

Their expressed curiosity and willingness to repeat the practice highlighted mindfulness as an accessible and meaningful tool for supporting emotional well-being in young people.
