A Journey Through the Five Elements
Exploring Inner Worlds Through Symbolism, Sensory Awareness, and Belonging
Implemented in Spain by AFENES, in collaboration with AIIJ. A Journey Through the Five Elements invited participants into a symbolic and sensory exploration of Water, Fire, Metal, Air, and Earth. Through movement, observation, creative expression, and reflection, young people explored emotional states using metaphor rather than direct explanation.
Although the symbolic language of the elements initially felt abstract for some, the session gradually unfolded into a deeply grounding experience. Visual cues, physical movement, and facilitator guidance helped participants connect elemental qualities, such as flow, intensity, stability, and breath, to personal emotions and inner experiences.
A defining moment of the session was the collective creation of a Creative Spiral, where individual contributions came together into a shared form. This process fostered a strong sense of belonging, emotional safety, and mutual presence within the group.
“I felt safe exploring parts of myself I usually keep hidden.”
Participants described the experience as pressure-free and supportive, allowing difficult-to-verbalise emotions to surface gently. The session highlighted how symbolism and sensory awareness can create inclusive pathways for emotional exploration, transcending language, culture, and prior artistic experience.
