Express Your Pain: Giving Shape to Difficult Emotions Through Visual Transformation

Implemented in Spain by AFENES, in collaboration with AIIJ. Express Your Pain provided a powerful artistic framework for young people to externalise and process emotional pain through visual creation. Rather than discussing difficult experiences directly, participants were invited to transform inner struggles into images, colours, and forms.
The act of making pain visible, placing it outside the body, proved deeply impactful. Participants engaged intensely with the process, often describing a sense of relief once emotions were expressed artistically rather than held internally.
“Painting my pain made it feel smaller and easier to handle.”
The session generated strong emotional release and high levels of engagement. Participants were able to articulate what they learned from the process, gaining insight into their emotional patterns and personal resilience.
By combining creative expression with emotional containment, Express Your Pain demonstrated how art can act as a bridge between intense inner experience and reflective understanding, supporting emotional regulation and psychological processing in a safe and structured way.
