Creating Space for Authentic and Pressure-Free Self-Expression
As part of the Healthy Inclusion through Art project, Magnolia implemented the activity “Free to Be”, creating a safe and open space where young people could explore self-expression through art.
The session focused on freedom, choice, and authenticity. Rather than asking participants to produce a specific artistic outcome, the activity encouraged them to engage with the creative process in their own way, at their own pace, and according to what felt meaningful to them.
This pressure-free approach allowed participants to express thoughts, feelings, and personal experiences without the need for explanation, evaluation, or imposed interpretation. Through drawing, colour, movement, or other creative forms, young people were invited to simply explore what it means to be themselves in the moment.
By implementing Free to Be at local level, Magnolia contributed to the wider transnational cooperation of the Healthy Inclusion through Art project. The activity supported the testing and documentation of open-ended artistic tools that can be used in youth work to promote participation, inclusion, and emotional wellbeing.
The session highlighted the value of creative freedom as a way to strengthen young people’s confidence, engagement, and self-exploration. It also demonstrated how art-based methods can offer accessible and inclusive pathways for young people to connect with themselves and others in a safe and supportive environment.
